Cooling Center opening in response to heat warning

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning with a predicted heat index between 105 and 110 degrees in the afternoon Wednesday, July 19, through Saturday, July 22. You can find the heat warning from National Weather Service Kansas City here.

 

The Roger T. Sermon Community Center, 201 N. Dodgion St., will be available as a cooling center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 through Saturday, July 22. The United Way of Greater Kansas City may activate additional Cooling Centers throughout the region as needed. Find the United Way list here, indep.us/kcuwcoolingcenters.

 

Following are a few general tips for hot weather:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities and when possible schedule work outdoors during the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.
  • If you must be outside, drink plenty of water and take regular breaks.
  • Check on elderly family and neighbors.
  • Never leave children or pets in the car, even for a few minutes.
