The City of Independence is seeking applications for an Animal Shelter Manager with a passion for improving the lives of animals, a high level of energy, and a desire to be involved in the community.

The City is preparing to open a new 27,260 square foot, state-of-the-art animal shelter in late September/early October 2012. It is anticipated that approximately 5,000 dogs and cats per year will be housed at the facility. The City’s goal is to work towards maintaining a “no kill” shelter.

The Animal Shelter Manager, under limited supervision, provides overall management of the Animal Shelter Division and division employees; and will assist with the establishment and implementation of goals to reach the mission of the Shelter. The Animal Shelter Manager manages and is responsible for all activities at the Animal Shelter, including but not limited to, daily operations, fundraising, educational programs, budget development, training and development of employees, and fiscal management; and serves as the shelter’s chief media spokesperson and official representative to governmental agencies, organizations and donors.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry, Public Health, Business Management, Criminal Justice or Science is required. However, applicable experience in animal control can be substituted for education (2 years of experience for 1 year of education). Preferred qualifications include experience with animal shelter operations, fundraising, and strategic planning. Certified Animal Welfare Administrator is preferred. Six or more years of progressively responsible experience required, to include supervisory experience. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Experience in basic staff management. Ability to communicate effectively. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands: Strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver up to 100 lbs. Standing on feet for up to 8 hours per day.

Typical Working Conditions: Inside animal shelter environment. Work is performed in a clinic/shelter setting. Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel areas. Exposure to high noise levels when in kennel area. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament and under the effects of anesthesia.
