You may purchase amembership to Kansas City Community Garden. A membership is required toparticipate in this part of the program. Membership is $2 for those who qualify for low or no income. Membership for all others is $12.Members are entitled to receive 10 packets of seeds (your choice), a five-pound bag of fertilizer, a community gardening newsletter, discount on additional seeds and fertilizer, a discount on vegetable plants and tiller loan privileges.

Independence Health Department Couch to 5K
Join the Independence Health Department in their FREE Couch to 5K program to prepare you to walk or run in the Independence Park Trot! Join us every Thursday (March 23-April 27) at 6 p.m. for weekly walks/runs at Waterfall Park (4501 S. Bass Pro Dr.). Trail Fun - Jumping Off
Saturdays in April 1-3 PM. Free with museum admission. Come to the NFTM to prepare for your epic 6 month journey to Oregon! Using a special trail guide provided at the front desk you will learn about what route you will take, investigate art to discover something about the “jumping off towns,” identify items in the General Store and finally pack a wagon with a Museum Educator as your guide! This is a wonderful way for families to discover a part of the history of westward expansion.

Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection Event
Annual free disposal event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Independence residents. All types of residential hazardous waste will be accepted: paint, motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, household cleaners, solvents, automotive and household batteries, oven cleaner, outdated medicines, poisons, herbicides and pesticides, kerosene, gasoline, fluorescent lightbulbs, etc.  No electronics will be accepted.  The Police Department will be on site for disposal of any type of explosives, fireworks or ammunitions, handguns, etc.  No appliances, tires, asbestos, yard waste, trash or pressurized cylinders will be accepted.  For more information contact Water Pollution Control at (816) 325-7711.
