In July of 2016, Community Development (Building Inspections division) implemented a “soft opening” of electronic plan review. The soft opening included familiarizing everyone with the process, including the permit techs, plans examiner, inspectors, and contractors. The contractors, designers, and architects were given a 6 month notice that January 1st 2017 we would only accept electronic plan submittal(s). A paper copy is still taken in, but is issued as the field set for the contractor once the permit is approved.
This is expected to relieve the department of large amounts of paper in the form of copies, plans retained, and tracking of paper plans, as well as provide contractors and citizens a smooth format for submitting and corresponding during the process.
Future plans include providing a “drop box” type email address for plan and revision submittal, and a kiosk in the 2nd floor lobby for quick permit application, contractor licensing, and printing. This will speed the process for plan review, as well as help contractors and citizens expedite the permit process and avoid waiting lines.
