The Current Planning division administers the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and implements the development process with the goal of ensuring quality development for the future of the City of Independence and the preservation of the community’s unique features. The UDO incorporates zoning and subdivision regulations, sign controls, design standards and land development procedures into one document.
The Planning staff review all development applications and accompanying plans and make recommendations to the Planning Commission and the Board of Adjustments on issues pertaining to land use—to include the subdivision of property, enforcement of the regulations, investigation of violations and complaints, issuance of special use permits, determination of legal non-conforming uses, variances from the regulations and rezoning requests and any other land use question that may come before these bodies.
The Current Planning division is located in on the second floor of Independence City Hall, 111 E Maple, Independence, MO 64050. Planners are available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at (816) 325-7421 or (816) 325-7823.
