Boards & Commissions

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is comprised of seven members, including the Chairperson, appointed by the Mayor for four (4) year terms. The Planning Commission makes recommendations to the City Council on development proposals and conducts public hearings on a variety of issues. The Commission meets twice each month in the City Council Chambers located on the lower level of City Hall at 111 E Maple Ave, Independence, Missouri. The meetings are also aired on City 7, the City’s Public Access television station. Information on Agendas and Minutes for the Planning Commission are noted below.

Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment is comprised of five members, including the Chairperson and is appointed by the Mayor for three year terms. The Board of Adjustment makes exceptions from the required standards of the Zoning Code for physical hardship reasons. The Board of Adjustment meets once per month in the City Council Chambers located on the lower level of City Hall at 111 E Maple Ave, Independence, Missouri. The meetings are also aired on City 7, the City’s Public Access television station. Information on Agendas and Minutes for the Board of Adjustment are noted below.

Heritage Commission

The Heritage Commission is comprised of nine members; two of which are ex-officio positions held by representatives of the Truman Presidential Library and the National Park Service. The remaining seven positions are appointed by the City Council. The duties of the Commission are to initiate, review and recommend properties for designation as a Landmark, Historic District, or Conservation District; establish specific design guidelines and review all applications for the alteration, construction, relocation or demolition of Landmarks or buildings within designated Historic or Conservation Districts for a Certificate of Appropriateness; to review all applications for all demolition permits for a Certificate of Appropriateness; review all special use permits effecting any designated property; to initiate, review, and make recommendations concerning National Register nominations to City Council and State Historic Preservation Officer; to initiate, develop and maintain cultural resource survey and inventory; to work with various governmental agencies on matters involving historic properties in the City; to recommend the application for grants, gifts or bequests to further historic preservation; and to review denials of a Certificate of Appropriateness or a Certificate of Economic Hardship. The Commission makes its recommendations to the Planning Commission and the City Council.

Other Boards & Commissions

Occasionally, other Boards and Commissions related to the work of the Community Development Department may meet during the year. When this occurs, their Agendas and Minutes will be included on this webpage. The groups may include the Tax Increment Financing Commission, the License Surcharge Committee along with other groups.
